Ham radio, also known as amateur radio is a hobby in which you use radios to communicate with people across your neighborhood, across the nation, or even in space. Ham radio operators come from all ages and all different walks of life. Ham radio operators can come in handy during natural disasters, providing communications when phones, computers, and all else fail. Ham radio can also be fun too! Occasionally, ham radio operators will hosts contests, in which other hams would have to contact as many people as possible in a given time frame. You may be asking, “Why do I need a license?” The answer is because the FCC needs to make sure you know what you’re doing before you get your hands on a radio. According the American Radio Relay League, you have to be licensed because “the FCC acknowledged the ability of the hobby to advance the communication and technical skills of radio and to enhance international goodwill.” You can read more about licensing here
